Slovak Document Legalization Dubai – Complete UAE & Slovakia Process

The UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, meaning the simpler Apostille certification issued in Bratislava is not legally valid in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or any other Emirate. For your Slovak documents to be accepted in the UAE, they must follow a multistep consular legalization process.

Here is what the process entails:

Slovakia Documents to be Used in The UAE

  • Slovak Official Verification: The document must first be certified by the appropriate Slovak authority that issued it (e.g., the Ministry of Education for academic papers or the Ministry of Interior for personal records).
  • Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MFEA): The document must be submitted to the MFEA of the Slovak Republic, which will affix its official seal and signature, certifying the authenticity of the previous Slovak official’s signature. This step confirms the document is ready for presentation to the foreign mission.
  • UAE Embassy/Consulate in Slovakia: The authenticated document is then submitted to the UAE Embassy (usually in Bratislava). The Embassy will apply its official stamp and signature, recognizing the document’s validity for use in the UAE.
  • Certified Arabic Translation: If the document is in a language other than Arabic, it will also require a certified translation performed by a MOJ-approved translator in the UAE.
  • UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC): This is the final and mandatory step. Upon the document’s arrival in the UAE, it must be presented to the UAE MOFAIC for their final attestation. This final stamp certifies the authenticity of the UAE Embassy’s seal, making the document officially recognized by all authorities within the Emirates.

UAE Documents to be Used in Slovakia

  • Issuing authority authentication or Notarization: The initial attestation depends on the document type. Educational certificates are submitted to the Ministry of Education (MOE); legal documents are submitted to a Notary Public, followed by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ). Lastly, commercial documents are authenticated by the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
  • UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC): The document then receives the official seal from the UAE MOFAIC, verifying the MOJ’s authentication.
  • Slovak Embassy/Consulate Legalization: The document must be submitted to the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in the UAE (usually in Abu Dhabi). The Embassy applies its final stamp, legalising the document and recognizing it as valid for use in Slovakia.
  • Certified Translation (in Slovakia): If the document is in Arabic or other languages, it will also require a certified Slovak translation performed by a sworn translator registered with the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic. About the Slovak Language

Slovak is the official language of Slovakia and is spoken by over 5 million people in the country, with substantial communities in the Czech Republic, the United States, and other parts of the world. It belongs to the West Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family, and uses the Latin alphabet, augmented with diacritics such as the caron (hook), acute (accent), and umlaut (double dot).

While the standardized form of Slovak is based on the dialects of Central Slovakia, the language is divided into three main dialect groups: Western, Central, and Eastern. These dialects vary primarily in phonology (sound system) and to a lesser extent in vocabulary and morphology (word forms).

These structural and contextual variations can create challenges in translation, including:

  • Literal translation of legal or civil terms (e.g., rodný list, pracovná zmluva, sobášny list) without adapting them to the correct jurisdiction or administrative context.
  • Misuse of formal versus informal second-person pronouns (using the polite “Vy” instead of the informal “ty”, or vice versa) can lead to inappropriate tone issues in official or business correspondence.
  • Errors in noun and adjective declension, which is a core grammatical feature. Slovak has six grammatical cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, locative, and instrumental), and mistranslating case endings can lead to significant grammatical and semantic errors in official documents.
  • Overlooking regional terminology or idioms, which can be critical in local legal or administrative records.
  • Formatting errors that make official documents non-compliant with embassy or ministry requirements, especially regarding the placement and type of official stamps or seals.
  • Using non-certified translators, resulting in rejected applications for immigration, study, or legal proceedings due to unverified accuracy.

Working with a certified Slovak translation agency ensures that every document is accurate and fully compliant with international standards.
