Indonesian Document Legalization Dubai – Complete UAE & Indonesia Process

Legalization is necessary for Indonesian documents to be recognized as legally valid in the UAE.

Important Note: Indonesia is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, but the UAE is not. This means an Apostille alone is not accepted in the UAE. Full consular legalization is mandatory.

For Indonesian Documents to be Used in the UAE

  • Document Preparation in Indonesia: Ensure the original document (e.g. birth certificate, marriage certificate, degree, business licence, or commercial document) is valid, accurate, and complete. Obtain a fresh copy from the issuing authority if required.
  • Notarization in Indonesia (if applicable): Certain documents, especially personal affidavits or corporate papers, may first require notarization by a licensed Indonesian notary public.
  • Ministry of Law & Human Rights Attestation (for private/commercial docs): Business contracts or notarial deeds often require verification here before proceeding further.
  • Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu RI) Attestation: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs verifies the authenticity of the document for international use.
  • UAE Embassy in Jakarta Legalization: The document must then be submitted to the UAE Embassy in Indonesia for consular legalization.
  • UAE MOFAIC Attestation in Dubai/UAE: Once in Dubai (or any Emirate), the legalized document must be attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation (MOFAIC).
  • Certified Arabic Translation (if required): For use in the UAE, documents must be translated into Arabic by a certified MOJ-approved translator in the UAE.

Note: Academic certificates may also need verification from Indonesia’s Ministry of Education before MFA attestation.

For UAE Documents to be Used in Indonesia

  • Document Preparation in the UAE: Obtain the original document (e.g. birth/marriage certificate, degree, power of attorney, or business licence). Ensure it bears the official seal of the issuing authority.
  • Notarization (if applicable): Some documents must first be notarised by a UAE notary public, particularly personal or corporate records.
  • UAE MOFAIC Attestation: Submit the document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation in the UAE for legalization.
  • Indonesian Embassy/Consulate Legalization in the UAE: The Indonesian Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate in Dubai legalises the UAE-attested document.
  • Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Indonesia Final Legalization: On arrival in Indonesia, the legalized document is submitted to the Indonesian MFA for final attestation.
  • Certified Bahasa Indonesia Translation: Documents in foreign languages must be translated into Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) by a court-sworn translator in Indonesia, if required for official use.

About the Indonesian Language

Indonesian is the official language of the Republic of Indonesia, with over 270 million speakers. It is also spoken in diaspora communities in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and beyond. It is widely used in government, business, and education.

Due to its role in official and legal contexts, Indonesian documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, academic transcripts, and corporate records, often require precise translation and legalisation for use abroad.

For example, Jakarta’s urban slang uses terms like “santuy” for “santai” (relax) or “gaskeun” for “ayo pergi” (let’s go). Central Javanese dialects often incorporate the “-e” or “-en” endings not found in standard Indonesian, whereas languages in Bali and Lombok frequently incorporate words from local languages.

These cultural differences present challenges in Indonesian document translation and legalisation. They include:

  • Variations in regional dialects and terms (e.g., differences between Standard Indonesian and colloquial forms).
  • Literal translation of legal terms instead of jurisdiction-appropriate equivalents.
  • Formatting errors that cause documents to be rejected by authorities.
  • Relying on non-certified translators, whose work may not be accepted.

Working with an experienced, certified Indonesian translation and legalization service in Jakarta ensures that your documents are accurate, compliant, and fully recognized by both Indonesian and international authorities.
