Georgian Document Legalization Dubai – Complete UAE & Georgia Process

Georgia is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, but the UAE is not. This means an Apostille alone is not accepted in the UAE. Documents must undergo full consular legalization for legal use in Dubai.

Georgian Documents for Use in the UAE

  • Notarization in Georgia: The first step is to have your document notarized by an authorized notary public in Georgia. This confirms the authenticity of the signature and document.
  • Ministry of Justice in Georgia: Submit the notarized copy to the Ministry of Justice for confirmation.
  • Attestation by the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA): After confirmation at the MOJ, submit the document to the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for further verification. This process is done at the Consular Department of the Georgian MFA.
  • Legalization by the UAE Embassy in Georgia: The next step is to obtain legalization from the UAE Embassy in Tbilisi. Embassy legalization validates the document for use in the UAE.
  • Certified Arabic Translation in the UAE: Translate the document into Arabic for official use, especially if it’s for immigration, government ministries, courts, and residency applications. A UAE Ministry of Justice-approved certified Arabic translator must translate the document to ensure it meets the local requirements.
  • UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation (MOFAIC): Take the translated documents and the original to MOFAIC in Dubai for attestation. This final step confirms all previous attestations and makes the document legally valid within the UAE.

UAE Documents for Use in Georgia

  • Notarization in the UAE: Notarize the document through a UAE public notary or the issuing authority, depending on the document type.
  • Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFAIC): After notarization, the document must be attested by MOFAIC. This verifies the signature and stamp as officially recognized.
  • Legalization by the Embassy of Georgia in the UAE: Submit the document to the Embassy or Consulate of Georgia in the UAE (typically in Abu Dhabi). This step is required before the document can be used in Georgia.
  • Translation into Georgian (if required): For specific administrative or legal processes in Georgia, documents must be translated into Georgian. A certified translator in Georgia should handle the translation to ensure compliance with local standards.
  • Attestation by the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA): The final step is the MFA’s attestation to confirm the authenticity of the UAE document and its translation. This completes the legalization process, making the document valid for official use in Georgia.

About the Georgian Language

Georgian is a South Caucasian (Kartvelian) language spoken by over 4 million people. The population of speakers are primarily in Georgia, with additional communities in Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and parts of Europe. Georgian uses its own unique writing system called the Mkhedruli script. This script style is written from left to right and contains 33 letters with no capital forms.

Within Georgian itself, regional dialects, such as Kakhetian, Imeretian, and Racha–Lechkhumian, can differ noticeably in pronunciation and vocabulary. However, standard Georgian, based on the Kartli and Kakheti dialects, is used in government, media, and education.

These linguistic and structural characteristics often create challenges in translation, including:

  • Literal translation of official civil terms (e.g., სამშობლო წიგნი – ID document, დაბადების მოწმობა – birth certificate, ქორწინების მოწმობა – marriage certificate) without adapting them to the correct UAE or international terminology.
  • Confusion between Georgian and other Kartvelian languages, since documents from regions such as Samegrelo or Svaneti may include names, spelling variations, or terminology not commonly used in Standard Georgian.
  • Complexities of the Georgian script, including unique characters, no capital letters, and rules for transliterating names into the Latin script. Incorrect transliteration often causes issues in passports, visas, and residency paperwork.
  • Regional terminology and spelling differences which can lead to inconsistencies when converting handwritten or older documents into standardized modern Georgian for legal or immigration use.
  • Formatting challenges, such as incorrect alignment of seals, errors in the structure of names (first name, father’s name, surname), or mistranslation of legal phrases used in Georgian court or ministry documents.
  • Use of non-certified translators, which often results in documents being rejected by embassies or government authorities due to inaccurate terminology, missing legal wording, or improper formatting.

Working with a certified Georgian translator ensures that each document is accurately translated, properly formatted, and fully compliant with the legal and consular requirements of both Georgia and the UAE.
