Do You Need Translation for RERA Documents in Dubai?
If a document is not already in Arabic and it’s going to the DLD, RERA, or the Rental Disputes Centre (RDC), it needs a legal translation.
Before you can join the UK register as a nurse, midwife, or nursing associate, the Nursing and Midwifery Council needs proof of English at C1 level, the CEFR standard for full fluency. This applies even if you trained entirely in English.
Most guides on the NMC English language requirements for nurses in the UK cover only two routes: sit a test, or show you are trained in English. There are actually four, including an employer evidence route that many working nurses do not know exists. This guide covers all four, so you can see which one applies to you.
The NMC accepts one of four types of evidence on its own. You do not need to combine routes.
Quick guide: If you trained in the Philippines, route 2 or 3 likely applies. If you trained in India, you will almost certainly need Route 1 or 4. If you’re already working in the UK as a healthcare assistant, route 3 or 4 may apply.
This is one of the most common routes for nurses. The NMC currently accepts two tests, IELTS Academic and OET, not TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic. Check the NMC’s accepted tests page before you book, since this can change.
The NMC accepts IELTS Academic, paper-based, or computer-based. You need at least 7.0 in reading, listening, and speaking, and 6.5 in writing, with an overall band of at least 7.0.
Here’s what you need to know;
OET uses healthcare scenarios throughout, including referral letters and clinical consultations. Most nurses find it more relevant than IELTS Academic’s essay format.
You need a grade B (350 or above) in reading, listening, and speaking, and a grade C+ (300 or above) in writing. OET on Paper, OET on Computer, and OET@Home are all accepted. You must also grant the NMC permission to verify your scores through your myOET account.
You can combine scores from two sittings of the same test, not IELTS with OET. To combine:
The NMC publishes a score-combining calculator on its website. Use it before deciding your scores qualify.
Your scores are valid for two years from your test date, not your application date. If CBT scheduling or qualification verification takes longer, check that your score has not expired before you submit, or you will need to resit.
If your pre-registration qualification was taught and examined in English, you may not need a test at all, though the criteria are specific.
Your programme must have been an NMC-approved course where at least 75% of your clinical interaction with patients, families, and colleagues happened in English.
If you trained in a country on the NMC’s majority English-speaking list, this route is straightforward. The Philippines is on it. India is not.
If you trained in English somewhere off that list, for example, India or parts of West Africa, you need two pieces of evidence instead: a transcript confirming your course was taught in English, plus supporting information from a current UK employer, which comes from Route 4 below.
If you have worked as a nurse, midwife, or nursing associate for at least one year in a country where English is the majority-spoken language, that practice can serve as your evidence. The year must have ended within the last two years of your application date, and the NMC will ask for evidence, such as employer references, to verify it.
The UK counts for this route. If you have worked here for at least a year, even as a healthcare assistant in a role comparable to nursing, you may be able to skip a test entirely. The NMC assesses each case individually, so check the requirements before you apply.
The NMC accepts supporting information from a current UK employer, known as SIFE, in two situations:
To use SIFE, you need at least 12 months with your current UK employer within the last two years, in health or social care. Your direct manager must be NMC registered and complete the standard employer form, countersigned by a more senior NMC registrant there. SIFE is supplementary evidence, and it does not guarantee registration.
Nurses applying from non-English-speaking countries must submit supporting documents in English. Anything issued in another language needs a certified document translation first, including:
The NMC follows UKVI standards for certified translation. The certified translation must include a signed statement of accuracy, the translator’s name and contact details, and evidence of accreditation such as CIOL, ITI, or ATC membership. LegalTranslator provides certified translations accepted by the NMC, delivered within 12 hours from anywhere in the world.
Both meet the same NMC standard, so the choice comes down to format and cost. OET uses healthcare scenarios: referral letters, discharge summaries, and clinical consultations. Most nurses find this more familiar than IELTS Academic’s general essays and lectures. Its writing requirement, 7.0, is also generally harder to reach than OET’s C+, so if writing is your weak point, OET may give you more room.
Cost differs, too. OET runs to roughly 587 GBP, against around 195 GBP for IELTS Academic. So if you’re budget-conscious, the IELTS Academic is cheaper. But if you prefer clinical language and can spend more, the OET may be the better option.
Meeting the NMC English language requirements for nurses in the UK starts with knowing which of the four routes fits you: a test, your training language, your work history, or your current UK employer. Get that right, and the rest of your registration moves faster.
If your nursing qualifications, good standing letter, or registration certificate were issued in a language other than English, you will need a certified translation before the NMC will accept them.
