Legal Translation Requirements in Sharjah

For a document to be accepted by authorities in Sharjah, it must meet the following requirements:

Documents issued outside the UAE must meet the following requirements before being used in Sharjah:

• Notarization in the Country of Origin: The document must first be notarized by a licensed Notary Public in the country where it was issued. This confirms that the document is genuine.
• Legalization by the Issuing Country: Because the UAE is not a member of the Hague Apostille, the document must be legalized by the appropriate government authority in the issuing country, usually the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an equivalent body.
• UAE Embassy or Consulate Attestation: After local legalization, the document must be attested by the UAE embassy or consulate in the country of origin to confirm it is recognized by UAE authorities.
• MOFAIC Attestation in the UAE: Once the document reaches the UAE, it must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC) for final validation.
• Legal translation into Arabic: If the document is not in Arabic, it must be translated into Arabic by a Ministry of Justice–approved legal translator after MOFAIC attestation.
• Ministry of Justice Certification: The completed translation must include the licensed translator’s stamp and signature, confirming it is legally valid for official use with UAE authorities.

Using Sharjah-Issued Documents Internationally

If your documents were issued in Sharjah or elsewhere in the UAE and you intend to use them outside the UAE, they must go through a formal legalization and translation process before they will be accepted by foreign authorities.

The typical process involves the following steps:

• Notarization in the UAE: Where required, the document must first be notarized by a licensed notary public in the UAE to confirm its authenticity.
• Ministry of Justice certification (if applicable): For legal documents or Arabic documents requiring certified translation, the document must be translated by a Ministry of Justice–approved legal translator and stamped accordingly before further legalisation.
• MOFAIC attestation in the UAE: After notarisation and any required legal translation, the document must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC). This step confirms the document is officially recognised by the UAE government.
• Foreign embassy or consulate attestation: Once MOFAIC attestation is completed, the document must be submitted to the embassy or consulate of the destination country within the UAE for final approval, based on that country’s requirements.
• Submission abroad: After completing all attestations, the document can be used legally in the destination country for immigration, employment, education, business, or court purposes.
