Croatian Document Legalization Dubai – Complete UAE & Croatia Process

Croatia is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, but the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is not. This means a Croatian Apostille alone is not valid for use in the UAE. To use Croatian documents in the UAE, they must go through full consular legalization before being accepted by UAE authorities.

Here’s what the process entails;

Croatian documents for use in the UAE

  • Notarization in Croatia: Have your document notarized by a Croatian Notary Public. This confirms that the signature or seal on the document is genuine.
  • Authentication by the Croatian Ministry of Justice or Competent Authority: Submit your notarized document to the Croatian Ministry of Justice (or the competent issuing authority) for authentication. This ensures the notary’s signature and seal are officially recognized.
  • Authentication by the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA): Next, take the authenticated document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Croatia for further legalization. The MFA confirms the authenticity of the previous authority’s signature or stamp.
  • Certified Arabic Translation in the UAE (if required): Documents to be used for official purposes in the UAE must be translated into Arabic by a UAE Ministry of Justice–licensed legal translator. This ensures the translation is accurate and legally valid.
  • Legalization by the UAE Embassy in Zagreb: Present the MFA-authenticated document to the UAE Embassy in Zagreb. The Embassy will verify and stamp the document, confirming it has been properly legalized by Croatian authorities.
  • Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA): Once in the UAE, submit the document to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) for final attestation. This step makes your document valid for use in the UAE.

UAE Documents for use in Croatia

  • Notarization in the UAE (If Applicable): If your document is private (e.g. a company document, affidavit, or power of attorney), get it notarized by a UAE Notary Public. Official documents (birth, marriage, degree certificates) issued by government bodies may not require this step.
  • Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA): Have your document attested by the UAE MOFA. This confirms that the document was issued by a legitimate UAE authority.
  • Certified Croatian Translation: If the document is not in Croatia, have it translated by a certified translator. This ensures the Croatia authorities can read and understand the document.
  • Legalization by the Croatian Embassy in Abu Dhabi: Submit your MOFA-attested document to the Embassy of Croatia in Abu Dhabi. The Embassy will review and stamp the document, confirming its authenticity for use in Croatia.
  • Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (Optional): Depending on the document type and purpose, you may need to submit the legalized document to the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs or the relevant local authority for final acceptance. Afterward, your document is valid for use in Croatia.

About the Croatian Language

Croatian (Hrvatski jezik) is a South Slavic language and the official language of Croatia, spoken by over 5 million people worldwide, including communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and the Croatian diaspora.

Croatian uses the Latin alphabet with specific diacritical marks (č, ć, š, ž, đ) that represent unique sounds. Its formal grammar, rich inflection system, and regional variations make accurate translation important.

For example, the term “osobna iskaznica” refers to a national ID card, while “rodni list” means birth certificate, both require precise rendering to UAE equivalents during translation and legalization.

These linguistic and structural nuances can lead to common translation challenges, such as:

  • Misinterpretation of case endings or gender forms, altering the meaning of names or legal terms.

  • Literal translation of administrative or legal terminology without adapting to UAE standards.

  • Confusion between Croatian, Bosnian, and Serbian variants, especially in multilingual documents.

  • Errors in diacritic usage or transliteration, leading to name mismatches in passports, visas, or Emirates IDs.

  • Submitting uncertified translations, which may be rejected by UAE embassies, courts, or ministries.

Working with an experienced, certified Croatian translation agency in Dubai ensures your documents are accurately translated and fully compliant with both Croatian and UAE legal requirements.
