Chinese Document Legalization Dubai – Complete UAE & China Process

China is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. However, the UAE is not a member and does not accept an Apostille in place of full legalization.

This means that documents moving between China and the UAE must still undergo the traditional legalization process between the local authority, Embassy/Consulate, and the UAE MOFA.

Here’s what this process entails;

For Chinese documents to be used in the UAE

  • Notarization in China: Take your Chinese documents (birth certificate, degree, marriage certificate, business license, etc.) to a notary public in China for initial verification.
  • Authentication by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA): After notarization, the documents must be authenticated by the MFA in China or its local foreign affairs offices.
  • Legalization by the UAE Embassy in China: Afterward, submit the authenticated documents to the UAE Embassy or Consulate in China for legalization.
  • Certified Translation into Arabic in the UAE: If the document is not in Arabic, reach out to us for a professional Arabic translation of your document done by an MOJ-Approved translator in the UAE.
  • Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA): The legalized documents must be taken to the MOFA in the UAE for final attestation before they can be officially used.

For UAE documents to be used in China

  • Notarization in the UAE (if applicable): Have the documents notarized by a local notary public in the UAE (only required for certain personal or corporate documents).
  • Attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA): Send the notarized document to the UAE MOFA to be attested before being sent abroad.
  • Certified Translation into Chinese: Since Chinese is the official language in China, the UAE document must be translated into Chinese. Reach out to us for a professional Chinese translation by certified translators.
  • Legalization by the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in the UAE: Submit the attested documents to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in Abu Dhabi or Dubai for legalization.
  • Verification in China (if requested): Some authorities in China may require further verification by the local Foreign Affairs Office, depending on the type of document and its intended use.

About the Chinese Language

As one of the world’s oldest written languages, Chinese carries more than 3,000 years of history and cultural influence. Today, it is the most widely spoken native language, with over 1.4 billion speakers.

When it comes to variation, Chinese differs by region and script. For instance, Simplified Chinese is the official writing system in mainland China and Singapore, while Traditional Chinese remains standard in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau.

Additionally, Mandarin, Cantonese, and other dialects are significantly different in pronunciation and vocabulary, which can affect translations if not carefully managed. For example, the term for “company seal” or “chop” may be expressed differently depending on context and region.

Due to its character-based script and regional variations, costly mistakes can occur in translation, such as;

  • Literal mistranslation of legal or technical terms (e.g., 公证书 gongzhengshu, 公司章程 gongsizhāngchéng) without using correct legal equivalents in Arabic or English.
  • Confusion between Simplified and Traditional characters, leading to document rejection.
  • Incorrect transliteration of Chinese names into English/Arabic, resulting in mismatches with passports or Emirates IDs.
  • Ignoring regional differences in vocabulary (e.g., Mainland vs. Hong Kong terminology) in corporate or academic records.
  • Submitting translations from non-certified providers, which may be rejected by embassies or ministries.

Working with an experienced, certified Chinese translation agency ensures accuracy and full compliance with both UAE and Chinese requirements.
